Sets Of Numbers
|
|
Sets |
A Set is a collection of items.
Items within a set are enclosed within curly
brackets eg. { 1,2,3]
In mathematics different types of numbers
belong to different sets as follows:
|
|
Natural Numbers |
These are
the numbers we count with and does not include zero.
{1, 2, 3, 3, 4, ......}
|
|
Whole Numbers |
These are
the numbers we count with including zero. Note no negatives numbers belong
to this set. {0, 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, ......}
|
|
Integers |
This is the
set of all whole numbers as well as the negatives of these whole numbers
including zero. (note zero is neither positive nor negative). {.....,-4, -3,
-2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, ......}
|
|
Cardinal Numbers |
These are
the numbers we refer to when we count. An example of this is if we count the
amount of elements within a set. eg. five sheep. {1, 2, 3, 3, 4,
......}
|
|
Ordinal Numbers |
These are
the numbers we refer to when we put items in order. An example of this is if
we sort numbers in ascending order. eg. 1st. , 2nd. , 3rd.
etc. |
|
Rational Numbers |
Rational
numbers are numbers that can be expressed as ratios, fractions (or parts of a whole).
These include integers
since an integer is also a fraction with a denominator of 1.
|
|
Real Numbers |
These
numbers corresponds to all points on the number line, such as the decimal
numbers.
Most real numbers, or decimal can be expressed as fractions, except non
terminating, non repeating decimals which are called irrational numbers.
|
|
Irrational Numbers |
Irrational numbers are numbers that cannot be expressed as the ratio of two
integers. The ratio of the circumference of a circle (total length around)
to its diameter is known by the name pi (π). The value of π can be
calculated, but has no determinate (final) result. Depending on how long you
calculate, the value of π can be expressed as 3.14 or 3.1416 or 3.14159265
or 3.141592653589793.
