ORDER OF
OPERATIONS
When solving equations or
doing any computations. You must follow the rules concerning the order in
which each operation takes place.
1st. Any operation in brackets eg. (2+3).
{ note: (inner most brackets (like this first))}
2nd. Exponents (see module 2)
3rd. Multiplication or Division (whichever
comes first from left to right).
4th. Addition or Subtraction (whichever
comes first from left to right).
Note
An addition is performed before a subtraction only if it appears before
the subtraction moving from left to right. The same applies for multiplication and division since it depends which
operation appears first moving left to right.
Note
If an equation or expression contains more
than one pair of grouping symbols (brackets), start operating within the
innermost pair outwards as in this example:
7 + {25 - 3 * (4 + 1)}
= 7 + {25 - 3 * 5}
= 7 + {25 - 15}
= 7 + 10
= 17
Problem
Solving
Read the question carefully and determine if the operation or action
requires an addition, a
subtraction, multiplication, division or combination of all these
to be done.
Determine what operations must be done first and simply find the result.
