If you know the perimeter of a rectangle, and you know the length of one side of the rectangle then you can calculate the length of the other sides.
Example: If you know the perimeter is 30 cm and one side is 9 cm. Then the opposite side is also 9 cm.
It follows that the other 2 sides = the complete perimeter minus these 2 known sides =  30 - (9 + 9) = 12 cm.
Since opposite sides are equal, then each side is equal to half of 12, so each of the other sides = 6 cm.
NOTE: Operations on a square will be similar to that of a rectangle, but simpler since all the 4 sides are equal.
