A variable
is a letter (or combination of
letters) that can represent a number. Variables are used in cases where a
number can vary.
Suppose you have 2 coins, and your friend gives you an unknown number of
coins, we can represent that unknown number by using a variable.
Now
look at the examples below:
Represent the unknown number of coins you get by the variable A. If you had
2 coins before and now you have 3 coins, then the
unknown number of coins you got from your friend is one. Therefore the
variable
A = 1
in the first example. |

Now represent
the unknown number of coins you get by the variable X. If you had 2 coins
before and now you have 4 coins, then the
unknown number of coins you got from your friend is two. Therefore the
variable
X = 2
in the second example.
Now represent
the unknown number of coins you get by the variable B. If you had 4 coins
before and now you have 6 coins, then the
unknown number of coins you got from your friend is two. Therefore the
variable
B = 2
in the third example. What is the value
of Y in
the next example ? |
